Trauma, Boundaries and the Body – 25 Hours

** This Class is Only Available for Students in The Harbin School of Healing Arts

Course Description

Trauma is stored in the body and can be triggered unconsciously in relationships.  So what happens when trauma emerges in the therapy room?  How can bodyworkers identify the signs of their clients’ trauma?  And what can bodyworkers do to heal the trauma, while staying within their scope of practice?  With an understanding of the way trauma affects the body, and how the therapeutic relationship can hold the space for trauma healing, healing professionals can be more effective in their clinical practice.

This course will cover the theoretical and practical approach to working psychobiologically with trauma and boundaries, based on the principles of Somatic Experiencing, Interpersonal Neurobiology, and other Somatic and traditional healing approaches.

This course is grounded in the understanding that trauma can be a vehicle for personal and social growth, and emphasis is not placed on re-living or remembering past traumas, but on learning to transform old patterns for greater fulfillment, pleasure and aliveness.

Benefit and Learning Outcomes

During the course students will:

  • Develop an understanding of and an appreciation for the complex nature of trauma, and its effect on the body, mind, and relationships.
  • Learn the psychobiological underpinnings for understanding, recognizing, and dealing with trauma.
  • Recognize the features of adaptive survival responses, including fight, flight, freeze and social engagement, and how they manifest therapeutically.
  • Respect the power of boundaries in relationships, and how creating safety via therapeutic boundaries deepens possibilities for healing.
  • Learn and practice somatic and interpersonally-oriented skills for working with trauma.
  • Recognize and manage their own triggers as a healing professional.
  • Recognize and manage their own relational styles as a healing professional.
