Working with Developmental Trauma: Pre & Perinatal Psychology, Early Imprints and Embodying the Whole Self

This educational and experiential workshop will present an overview of working with complex trauma, integrating a body-mind approach in addressing clients’ attachment challenges and developmental disruptions.  We will explore the complex, psychobiologically-driven relational framework that is often largely unconscious.  This framework, laid down by our early attachment experiences, shapes our development, who we are in the world (our self), and how we relate to others.   When clients are having difficulty shifting out of patterns of dysregulation, these implicit dynamics are at play and must be addressed.  We will focus on how an integrative treatment approach – based on a psychobiological understanding – helps build clients’ capacity for self-regulation and interpersonal connection.

We will discuss and explore:

  • A review of  the Social Brain, developmental trauma, and working with early shame and terror
  • Pre & Perinatal development – critical periods of brain/body growth
  • Early developmental imprints and the intrapersonal and relational patterns they create
  • Differentiating past patterns (child consciousness) from present experience (adult consciousness) – separating what’s “my stuff” out
  • The interplay of shock, developmental and relational wounds
  • Working both “top-down” (talk therapies) and “bottom-up” (somatic therapies): Reviewing and practicing interpersonal somatic skills in working with complex trauma
  • A phase model of working with developmental trauma
